Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland

Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland (CHSS) is an independent Scottish medical charity and aims to improve the quality of life for people affected by chest, heart and stroke illness.

We rely on a team of over 1000 volunteers across Scotland to help deliver services to people who have suffered a stroke or Heart Failure and help to raise the funds needed.

Medical Research
We spend over £600,000 each year on vital medical research projects in Scottish hospitals and medical schools. These projects cover the whole range of prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of chest, heart & stroke illness.

Advice & Information
Our advice line provides confidential independent advice on all aspects of chest heart & stroke illness to people affected, their families, carers and health professionals. Phone/Textphone 0845 077 6000. Calls charged at local rates.

We produce an extensive range of booklets, factsheets, tapes, videos and DVD’s.

Community Services

The Volunteer Stroke Service (VSS)
The main rehabilitation service of CHSS and run by CHSS. Our Volunteer Stroke Service supports people who have had a stroke, particularly those with communication problems in a welcoming and stimulating environment and encourages social interaction. This is achieved through weekly support groups  and/or working one to one with service users in the community.
By supporting our members in conversation you can help their rehabilitation and make it easier for them to communicate with other people.

The Community Support Network (CSN)
Consists of independent member led groups offering support which are affiliated to CHSS.

Welfare Grants & Benefits Advice
are available for those in financial difficulties because of the effects of chest, heart & stroke illness.

Fundraising
The charity needs £5million per year to provide services to thoses affected by chest, heart & stroke illness. To maintain and expand our vital work we rely almost entirely on the continuing generous support of the Scottish public, business and community organisations. Every pound raised in Scotland is spent on research and services in Scotland. Fundraising activities include: bike rides, marathons, abseils and driving challenges and many more.

Charity Shop
Dumbarton Road, Partick, Glasgow. Come along and have a look or donate any unwanted items.

Volunteers
A vital part of CHSS, without their dedicated support none of our work would be possible. Help us to make a difference!
You can help by becoming a conversation partner, driver, group helper within our VSS services or help raise funds by working in one of our charity shops, or even assist at a fundraising event. There are even volunteer opportunities for those with administrative or IT skills.

If you could spare a few hours, you don’t need any special talents to join us. We provide training and out of pocket expenses. In return we offer the chance to learn new skills, meet new friends and the satisfaction of helping people in your local community – and most importantly ENJOY YOURSELF!
