A new strip, a new season, a new format to the league cup, a new full back, a new striker who was an old striker but is new again saw an opening day vistory for the twice SSML champs - nothing new there!!!
Blochairn started with 3 men up front and Murray, Adam and Brian all got on the scoresheet in a game that was won more comfortably than the scoreline suggests although Kelvinbridge were diligent and commited for 90 minutes and were justly rewarded with a counter strike with a couple of minutes to.
The first goal came after 10 minutes when Kev Connel (new full back) linked up with Paul Roan who the played in Muzz who finished well. Adam doubled the lead mid way through the half, getting on a great cut back from Muzz. There were other chances as the half progressed and Johnny Sharkey was rarely troubled in the Blochairn goal.
Brian Henderson rocketed a free kick into the top left hand corner when the 2nd half was only 5 minutes old to make it 3-0 and we felt we could have went on to win by a more comfortable margin. Brian returns after his one season sabatical at St Antonys Juniors and will prove a valuable addition to the Blochairn offensive line.
Jamie, Adam and Brian were replaced by Gerry, Clayton and weee John as Blochairn maintained the lions share of possesion but credit to Kelvinbridge who were unlucky with a couple of offside decisions but scored a good goal to make it 3-1. Othere results saw 1st division teams have big margin victories against 3rd division teams but we will need to be aware that teams will be satisfied to sit in against us and try to counter attack which Kelvinbrige accomplished reasonably on Saturday.
Blochairn wore the new green and white hooped strip and we thank our sponsors. Next up in the 4 match section is last years 3rd division champions SCYP away.
